Top 10 Best 360 Videos of 2017

It’s been some time since we’ve covered 360° content and VR in general so today we’re taking a close look at some of the best 360° videos of 2017.

Over the past few years, Virtual Reality has been making steady strides towards the main stream, and with each confident step we get to see why it’s such a powerful and promising new technology. Journalism, healthcare, advertising – there seem to be no end to the possibilities here. The best 360° videos of 2017 have been spread far and wide across social media, and the overall usage of immersive technology such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or Samsung GearVR has been sky-rocketing since VR made its industry-entrance in the summer of 2016.

Ranging from brands such as BBC, Gorillaz, Red Bull and more, all the way to popular YouTubers, this list will contain a little bit of everything we’ve come to know and love this year. Without further ado, we present to you the top 10 best 360° videos of 2017:

10. Buzzfeed – A Day In The Life Of A ’90s Teen

First up we have Buzzfeed with “A Day in the Life of a 90’s Teen“. BuzzFeed has recently grown to become the world’s #1 preferred website-based procrastination destination and it’s no surprise to us that the editorial staff has decided to pick up 360° degree video as a new method of storytelling. This is not the first time they have decided to go with spherical media and VR video, and likely won’t be their last either. Take a stroll down memory lane and re-familiarise yourself with the good old 1990’s!

The most detailed of it’s kind in fact, and it takes us through the many sites of Venice including the gorgeous paintings residing within the Hall of the Great Council, in the heart of the venetian republic. Explore the wonders of one of the world’s holiest sites, and get a feel of just how much more engaging the story is, thanks to its experimental use of 360° video. We have a lot of high-profile brands today, but what’s really interesting is that this next one has more followers than them all combined! Swing by YouTube celebrity Markiplier, as he embarks on a trip in the virtual realm of Minecraft. If you have any kind of creative flair, you’ll probably want to take it for a spin yourself. While this video demonstration is just a 360° video of Markiplier and his glorious YouTube tech setup, MineCraft actually does have a VR app, and you can head right over to the Oculus Store and pick up your copy here (GearVR) or here (Oculus Rift).

 6. British Airways – Madrid

British Airways launched this gorgeous 360° video tour of some of the hidden sites in the city of Madrid earlier this year. The video is filled to the brim with facts, tips and tricks as well as recommendations you might want to consider if you plan on visiting. We’re psyched to see that the use of VR has been onboarded by industries outside of just traditional tech branches such as video games and entertainment. VR Tourism is becoming a thing, and in case you haven’t seen it yet, make sure to check out Qantas Airways’ compelling tour of Hamilton Island.

This has been re-made in a gorgeous 360° video environment, and is surely a worthy watch, whether you’re 100% synced on the science of it all or not.

Some time ago, the media department over at the NYT decided to make the use of 360° video technology a daily part of their content plan for the year. What this means is that if you have any interest in the use of 360° videos in journalism, you now have a daily source of content. “We Who Remain” is the captivating story of four different people from the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, and how they make it through life in a harsh but very real, post-war environment.

Drop by Italy, and experience what it’s like to bounce off massive cliffs and ledges straight into the Mediterranean sea! Do yourself a favour and pick up a Samsung GearVR or similar high-end mobile VR headset for this one.

1. Walt Disney – Duck Tales: The Lost Key of Tralla La

Finally we reach the end of our list, and with it, the surprising fact that there’s not a single person to be found in the video. Rather than action-packed sports car races or pristine examples of 21-century architecture we find the age-old characters from Walt Disney‘s very own Donald Duck universe. Scrooge Mc’Duck and the bond he shares with nephews is arguably one of the most iconic relationships in the Donald Duck universe, and in today’s #1 pick of the top 10 best 360° videos of 2017 we’ll embark on yet another adventure with the gang.

For you to really experience just how well this one is made, we highly recommend that you strap on on some kind of VR headset, as there is a fair amount of action going on here. Panning back and forth with your mouse or swiping finger gestures is only going to ruin an otherwise flawless display of immersive video.
